Miami Museum of Science & Space Transit Planetarium features an A&ES-themed dig of an ancient sarcophagus of Mexico’s Palenque Temple…

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 19 museums and the National Zoological Park. Wowing audiences since 1949 with science exhibits and a planetarium, the Miami Science Museum relocated to Museum Park in downtown Miami, a new $305 million facility with significant support from Phillip and Patricia Frost in 2017. The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, designed by internationally renowned Grimshaw Architects, brings the most spectacular high-design experience to Miami’s already bustling cultural landscape. The three-level, 250,000 square-foot complex demonstrates ecological and sustainability principles by harnessing energy from water, sun, wind, and museum visitor energy to power and conserve resources. The museum spotlights a lushly landscaped indoor and outdoor “living core” of terrestrial and aquatic spaces. Popular is the 500,000-gallon suspended Gulf Stream Aquarium hosting sharks, rays, and other fish. View from above on an open-air deck or from below through a 31-foot-wide lens. Other favorites are a full-dome, 16-million-color 8K planetarium using six 3-D projectors, hands-on exhibits, cutting-edge technology, and two additional wings of exhibition space, classrooms, and cafes.

A&ES Build Highlights

The new facility replaces the much smaller Miami Science Center and Space Transit Planetarium, which in 2015 closed the Coconut Grove location it had occupied for 55 years. The new museum’s planetarium is one of 13 worldwide equipped with an advanced 8K projection system. Frank Steslow, a microbiologist and museum president, says it’s unusual to have a single museum include a planetarium, an aquarium, and a science museum.
